Vise Library Digital Image Collections
The Buchanan Photograph Collection consists of 63 glass plate negatives taken by Isaac William Pleasant Buchanan, a graduate of Cumberland University (A.B. 1885, Ph.D. 1892). I.W.P. Buchanan was the Head of the Mathematics Department at Cumberland from 1894 to 1898 and the first Headmaster at Castle Heights Academy in Lebanon, Tennessee. Although very little detail is available about the subjects depicted in the photographs, they are primarily family members and house servants. The images show scenes of the people and places of Lebanon during the late 1800s to the early 1900s, including the local buildings of the period. The collection was a donation from Dr. Virginia Lockmiller, a long-time trustee of the University. We are grateful to the staff of the Tennessee State Library and Archives for digitizing the images.
